Red Lava Lamp – Enjoy The Psychedelic Effect
A specialty red lava lamp can keep anyone entertained for hours at a time. The red lava in a clear liquid does
not require any muddling with chemicals to enjoy its soothing effect. All you have to do is plug it in.
A red lava lamp provides the magical appeal of a traditional lava lamp with an extra groovy, psychedelic touch.
For the ultimate in mood lighting, a red lava lamp is a perfect room accessory for parties or intimate
get-togethers. Perhaps the most sought-after of all lava lamps, a red lava lamp will always make a strong
impression.
The red lava lamp is a decorative, tube-shaped globe with a red, oily fluid that slowly flows up and down and is
reminiscent of lava. The fluid constantly changes shape into different-sized blobs, providing the psychedelic
appearance. The basic materials are a bulb, globe, water, and wax.
The bulb is a standard incandescent bulb or halogen lamp, usually of about 40 watts. The bulb provides both the
light and the heat for the red lava lamp, as it is essential that the interior is not under or over heated. If not
heated precisely, the wax will float on the bottom of the globe, creep up the side, or simply break up into small
bubbles.
The globe contains the water and the red wax, as well as the manufacturer’s secret additives. All of the
components are non-toxic and safe. The red wax is slightly denser than the water at room temperature, but becomes
less dense as the lamp warms because wax expands more than water when they are heated. The red lava lamp should be
allowed to warm up for approximately four to six hours when it is first used, but then with normal usage it takes
just several minutes for the lamp to heat up enough so that the wax becomes fluid.
As its specific gravity decreases, freely formed blobs of red wax rise to the top of the lamp, where they
quickly cool and then descend. There is a metallic wire coil in the base of the globe that provides a surface
tension breaker so the cooled blobs of red wax can recombine at the bottom of the lamp after they descend.
There are a few guidelines to keep in mind when using your red lava lamp. First, the lamp should always be kept
at room temperature, and it should not be placed near sources of heat or cold. It should be kept on a stationary
surface, and it should not be allowed to tip over. The lava should never be shaken, mixed up, or swirled, and the
lamp should not be moved while it is hot.
Essentially, the lava lamp needs to be handled with care, especially the glass globe. The red lava lamp should
not be operated for more than ten hours at a time because this can create too much heat, which will affect the flow
action of the lava. Finally, before moving the lamp or performing any maintenance on it, the lava lamp should be
allowed to cool off for two to three hours after it is unplugged.
By following these simple guidelines, you can enjoy the relaxation and intimacy of your red lava lamp for
years.
