Purple Lava Lamp – Possibly The Coolest Lava Lamp Ever!
A specialty purple lava lamp is a great addition to any bedroom, living room, or entertaining area. A great
conversation piece, your purple lava lamp will really draw attention and friends and family will enjoy its
soothing, mesmerizing effect. There are no chemicals or other substances you need to mix or measure, just plug in
your purple lava lamp, sit back and be entertained.
Edward Craven-Walker invented the lava lamp in 1963. This cultural icon was extremely popular in the 1960s and
1970s and is quickly regaining popularity today. Differently shaped balls of wax in the lamp slowly rise and fall
like lava, creating a psychedelic, almost hallucinatory effect. The purple lava lamp only compounds this
impression.
The basic materials of the purple lava lamp are a bulb, the globe, water, and wax. The bulb is a standard
incandescent bulb or halogen lamp, usually of about 40 watts. The bulb provides both the light and the heat for the
purple lava lamp. If the components are not heated precisely, the wax will float on the bottom of the globe, creep
up the side, or simply break up into small bubbles.
The globe contains the water and the wax, although manufacturers keep their specific ingredients a secret.
However, they are all non-toxic and safe. The wax is slightly denser than the water at room temperature, but
becomes less dense as the lamp warms since wax expands more than water when they are heated.
Your purple lava lamp should be allowed to warm up for approximately four to six hours when it is first turned
on, but with normal usage it takes just several minutes for the lamp to heat up enough so that the wax becomes
fluid.
As its specific gravity decreases, freely formed blobs of wax rise to the top of the lamp, where they quickly
cool and then descend. There is a metallic wire coil in the base of the globe that provides a surface tension
breaker so the cooled blobs of wax can recombine at the bottom of the lamp after they descend.
Your purple lava lamp should always be kept at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, and it should not be
placed near sources of heat or cold such as a heater or air conditioner. It should be kept on a stationary surface,
and it should not be allowed to tip over. The lava should never be shaken, mixed up, or swirled, and the lamp
should not be moved while it is hot.
Allow it to cool for two to three hours first. Your purple lava lamp needs to be handled with care, especially
the glass globe. The lamp should not be operated for more than ten hours at a time because this will create too
much heat, which can affect the flow action of the lava.
Just plug it in, and your purple lava lamp will be the coolest mood lighting in the neighborhood. It will
enhance any room decor.
