Lava Lamp Bulbs – Revitalize Your Lava Lamp
As with all light bulbs, the length of time a lava lamp bulb will last depends on its usage. If the wax is
settling at the bottom, it may be time to change the lava lamp bulb. It is vitally important that the correct
replacement bulb is used. This information should be listed on the base of the lava lamp. The same lava lamp bulb
size and wattage must always be used to avoid unsatisfactory operation.
If your lamp is not functioning optimally, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the lamp is broken. More often than
not, a replacement lava lamp bulb will restore your unique lava lamp to its original mesmerizing, psychedelic
condition.
There are a number of guidelines to follow when enjoying a lava lamp, and it is important to remember that each
lava lamp essentially has its own personality, that is, no two lava lamps will perform exactly the same way. First,
the lava lamp should always be kept at room temperature, and it should not be placed near sources of heat or
cold.
The lava lamp bulb should also be allowed to warm up for approximately four to six hours when it is first used,
and even with frequent use, the lava lamp bulb can take anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes to warm up enough so that
the wax becomes fluid.
The lava lamp should be kept on a stationary surface, and it should not be allowed to tip over. The lava should
never be shaken, mixed up, or swirled, and the lamp should not be moved while it is hot. Essentially, the lava lamp
should always be handled with care, especially the glass globe.
The lamp should not be operated for more than ten hours at a time because this can create too much heat, which
will affect the flow action of the lava. Finally, before moving the lamp or performing any maintenance on it, the
lava lamp bulb should be allowed to cool off for two to three hours after the lamp is unplugged.
The lava lamp bulb provides both the light and the heat for the lava lamp, and it is essential that the proper size
and wattage of bulb is used so the lamp’s interior is not under or over heated. If it is not heated precisely, the
wax or oil will float on the bottom of the globe, creep up the side, or simply break up into small bubbles. As the
lava lamp bulb warms, the wax in the globe becomes less dense and more fluid as the specific gravity decreases.
Freely formed blobs slowly rise to the top of the lamp, where they cool and then descend. A metallic wire coil
in the base of the globe provides a surface tension breaker so the cooled blobs of wax are able to recombine at the
bottom of the lamp after they descend. They then heat and rise again.
